Some words from my quiet time on Luke 14:25-35

“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.”

Jesus does not mince words in this teaching, and as I was reading this I found myself starting to get somewhat angry.  This is incredible, hate my father, my mother, my wife, my kids, what!!  But then I stopped and began to think about what I was reading.  What in my life is standing in the way of my relationship with Christ, is it my kids, my wife?

He then goes on in verse 31, “Or what king, going out to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?”  Did I really understand what I was getting myself into when I decided to commit my life to Jesus, did I count the cost?

And then the kicker, verse 33, “So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.”  This is hard, I’m not going to lie, it hurts sometimes and I often wonder what is going through our Heavenly Fathers mind when he sees my somewhat feeble attempts at forsakeing all.  I am thankful for His grace and His mercy.
